St. Michael's Church at Hildesheim was founded in 1010 from Bishop Bernward (960-1022) as his burial site.
Bernward was an influential cleric, who had close contact with rulers of his time. It was shortly after his death by Pope Celestine III. (Term 1191-1198) canonized. The Church of St. Michael is one of the most important pre-Romanesque religious buildings north of the Alps and involves a series of outstanding works of art. Since 1985 it belongs to the world heritage of UNESCO.
After the Reformation, it was agreed that the area of the tomb of Bishop Bernward reports to the Catholic Church, the rest of the structure of the Lutheran Church.
On 22 March 1945 razed to the ground, St. Michael was quick to set up an admirable way again.
