Saxoburgum - 1280-2009

14 decembrie 1280 - Prima atestare documentară a oraşului Sighişoara. Sighişoara (în dialectul săsesc Schäsbrich, Šesburχ, în germană Schäßburg, în maghiară Segesvár, în latină Saxoburgum) este un oraş situat în judeţul Mureş, Transilvania, România. Municipiul are o populaţie de 32.304 locuitori. Cronicarul sighişorean Georg Krauss (sau Georgius Krauss, sau Georg Kraus) (1607-1679) menţionează că în anul 1191 locul unde acum se află Sighişoara era locuit, dar prima atestare documentară a aşezării este din anul 1280 sub numele de Castrum Sex. În anul 1298 este menţionată denumirea germană Schespurch (mai târziu "Schäßburg"). Localitatea este menţionată în anul 1367 ca "civitas" (oraş). Numele românesc al oraşului este atestat în scris din anul 1435. Forma "Sighişoara" a pătruns în română pe filieră maghiară, fiind o adaptare a numelui "Segesvár" ("cetatea Segheş").

December 14th 1280 - first documented the city of Sighişoara. Sighişoara (German: Schäßburg; Hungarian: Segesvár; Latin: Castrum Sex) is a city and municipality on the Târnava Mare River in Mureş County, Romania. Located in the historic region Transylvania, Sighişoara has a population of 32,287. During the 12th century, German craftsmen and merchants known as the Transylvanian Saxons were invited to Transylvania by the King of Hungary to settle and defend the frontier of his realm. The chronicler Krauss lists a Saxon settlement in the actual Sighiṣoara by 1191. By 1280 it was known by the Latin name of Castrum Sex, and by 1298 by the Saxon name of Schespurch resp. Schaesbrich. By 1337 Sighişoara had become a royal center for the kings, who awarded the settlement urban status in 1367 as the Civitas de Segusvar.
