Details: Sang Thong - a Popular Dramatic Verse
Thailand Post Company Limited has printed Sang Thong, a traditional Thai dramatic verse, on the postage stamps published in commemoration of the 2010 National Children's Day. This is the second time that the Company has selected major characters from Thai popular literature to grace Thai postage stamps for stamp collectors and those interested.
Sang Thong is a folk storythat is well-known all over the country. The story also appears in the Panyas Jataka Stories and is known by the name Suvana Sang Jataka. It is popular in the South in the form of a narrative written for chanting. The story, commonly called Sang Thong or Hoy Sang, also appears in the tradintional lullaby, beliefs, folk plays and games.
The Sang Thong that is used as a literary text for young Thai students was composed in the form of the dramatic verse by King Buddha Lerdlah Naphalai. This version has also been adapted for stage performance.
